A long-time rural LaPorte County recipient named Betty was recovering from cancer and chemotherapy. During a routine meal delivery, the volunteer discovered Betty had learned her cancer had returned.

The volunteer immediately embraced her, and Betty responded: “I needed that — I have no one to hug me.”

The interaction demonstrated how meal delivery combines nourishment with compassionate human connection. For many of our clients, the daily visit from a Meals on Wheels volunteer is their only personal contact for the day. What starts as a hot meal becomes something much more — a lifeline of caring, dignity, and hope.
