For many of the seniors served by Meals on Wheels LaPorte County, the daily meal delivery is more than nutrition — it’s often the only human connection they have all day. Social isolation is one of the most pressing challenges facing older adults, and its effects on health can be as damaging as smoking 15 cigarettes a day, according to research from the National Institute on Aging. That’s where the Creative Care program comes in.
The idea is simple but powerful: local students — from elementary schoolers to high school art clubs — decorate paper lunch bags and write greeting cards that are delivered alongside our daily meals. The colorful artwork and heartfelt messages turn an ordinary delivery into a small, bright surprise. A crayon drawing of a sun. A note that reads, “You are loved.” A sticker-covered bag that makes a Tuesday feel like a birthday.
The program runs year-round, with participating schools and youth groups creating bags in batches. Teachers use it as a service-learning project, tying it into lessons about empathy, community responsibility, and the challenges faced by older adults. Some groups visit the Meals on Wheels kitchen to see where the meals are prepared, putting faces and context to the work their artwork supports.
“You should see the smiles when clients open a bag covered in drawings and find a little note inside. Some of them tape the cards to their refrigerators and keep them there for months. One gentleman told me it was the first piece of mail — real mail, he said — that he’d gotten in over a year. It means the world to them.”
A Meals on Wheels delivery volunteer
The impact runs both ways. Students who participate report feeling more connected to their community and more aware of the needs of older adults. For many, it’s the first time they’ve thought about what it means to live alone, to have difficulty cooking, or to go days without a visitor. The program plants a seed of civic awareness that often grows into deeper involvement — several former Creative Care students have gone on to become Meals on Wheels volunteers themselves.
Creative Care also highlights a truth at the core of Meals on Wheels’ mission: the meal is the vehicle, but the connection is the point. Every bag, every card, every handwritten note is a small act of defiance against the loneliness that too many seniors face every day. It costs almost nothing and changes everything — for the person who receives it and the young person who made it.
Schools, scout troops, church groups, and youth organizations across LaPorte County are welcome to participate in Creative Care. All you need is some markers, some paper bags, and a willingness to spread a little kindness. Contact Meals on Wheels LaPorte County to get started — our team will coordinate pickup and delivery so your students’ artwork reaches the people who need it most.
