On the morning of July Fourth, a group of Meals on Wheels volunteers gathered in a parking lot off Franklin Street to put the finishing touches on something that had been weeks in the making: a flower-covered parade float that would carry the organization’s message — and its people — straight through the heart of Michigan City.
The float was a labor of love. Volunteers had spent evenings and weekends wiring artificial flowers onto the frame, stretching banners across the sides, and fashioning a display that was equal parts patriotic and joyful. By parade time, the float was bursting with color — reds, whites, blues, and the distinctive Meals on Wheels teal — a rolling garden making its way down the route.

As the float rolled past crowds of families, veterans, and children waving flags from lawn chairs, volunteers walked alongside handing out flyers and waving to the spectators. The reaction was immediate and warm — cheers, waves, and plenty of people pulling out their phones to snap photos. For many onlookers, it was a reminder that Meals on Wheels isn’t just a national brand; it’s the neighbor who shows up at your grandmother’s door every weekday at noon.

“Riding that float is one of the highlights of my year. You see families pointing, kids yelling ‘Meals on Wheels!’ — and you realize people actually know who we are and what we do. It’s the best kind of advertising, because it’s real people showing up and saying, ‘We’re your neighbors, and we care.’”
A longtime delivery volunteer
The Fourth of July parade is one of several community events Meals on Wheels LaPorte County participates in each year. From the Sand Sculpture Festival to the annual Mayor’s Ball, these appearances keep the organization visible and connected to the community it serves. They’re also a chance for volunteers to give back in a different way — not by delivering meals, but by sharing the story of why those meals matter.
Want to be on next year’s float? Meals on Wheels LaPorte County is always looking for new volunteers — whether you want to deliver meals, help at events, or pitch in behind the scenes. Learn how to get involved, or make a donation to help keep the wheels turning.
